MODULE 1&2
Introduction &Â Welcome to the World of SFX Makeup
Modules 1 and 2 welcome students to the course, introduce the instructor, and outline the main objectives. They provide an introduction to SFX makeup and body painting, addressing common fears and how to overcome them. Essential terms and safety tips for skin sensitivities are covered. Common myths about SFX are debunked. The modules end with a simple mini project and tips for setting up a home SFX station.
MODULE 3&4
Paints 101 &Â Tools of the Trade
Modules 3 and 4 focus on understanding different types of paints and tools used in SFX makeup. They compare water-based, cream-based, and alcohol-activated paints, including their pros, cons, and best uses. Common beginner mistakes, budget tips, and paint swatching are also covered. The tools section explains brush types, sponges, and texture techniques. Finally, students learn how to clean tools, mix for custom effects, and build a starter kit affordably.
MODULE 5&6
Proportions &Â Skin, Hair Protection
Modules 5 and 6 explore facial structure and skin preparation for SFX makeup. Students learn to map the face, identify face shapes, and use illusion techniques to enhance or reshape features, while balancing symmetry. The modules also introduce face charts and a practice challenge. In skin prep, topics include primer use, barrier sprays, brow and hairline coverage, and taping techniques. Tips for sensitive skin, lash protection, and long-wear application are also provided through hands-on practice.
MODULE 7&8
Mastering SFX Details &  Build-a-Look Â
Modules 7 and 8 dive into advanced SFX techniques and full look creation. Students learn to use shading, highlights, and blending to create depth and realism in effects like bruises, aging, and wounds. Line work, blood effects, and special finishes like metallics and glitters are explored. In concept development, students design a complete look through moodboarding, sketching, and layering techniques. Emphasis is placed on cohesive design, illusion effects, and refining details through self-critique.
MODULE 9&10
Special FX Elements & Removal/ Recovery/ Reflecting
Modules 9 and 10 focus on working with FX materials and proper removal techniques. Students explore products like latex, gelatin, scar wax, and silicone to create realistic wounds, burns, and textures such as veins or fantasy elements like scales and horns. Safe application and removal are emphasized throughout. The final project challenges students to design a complete fantasy or horror character look. The course concludes with lessons on paint removal, skincare, hair recovery, and feedback, ending with certification.
